String Dreams

A while back, I wrote some important dreams and memories down. A friend saw me writing, glanced over my shoulder, read “running through the sprinkler that turned out to be sewage water” and was incredibly confused since it meant nothing to her.

My memories and dreams are mine alone and though other people have similar elements in their memory, they aren’t the same.

I drew images from important memories and dreams of mine and made a giant connect-the-dots out of string. I didn’t put any numbers on the connect-the-dots and let others connect them in their own way while I connected them in the way that corresponded to my memories.

I played music from my iTunes whenever I showed it. Feel free to pick something of your choice, the silence can be a bit strange.

I meant for this piece to be about fibers and 3-D being as legitimate art-wise as anything that happens in 2-D.

I drew apples because they were the first thing I saw on my kitchen table. Then I projected the apple drawing on myself and a canvas. I meant for it to say that the same art product can come out of both canvas (2-D) and fibers (3-D)

I did the projection part quickly because, honestly, shitduetomorrow. I didn’t realize the placement of the apples looks very fertile. It wasn’t done on purpose, though I think some sub-thought process was going on.

Pincushion Layout

In real life, this is much bigger, with more squares. When I first moved to Baltimore I got the chance to see lots of historic and great art. It was a different experience seeing pieces I’d seen in books in person. I wanted to make a piece about how different that was. Also about how I didn’t need all the expensive and fancy supplies I was being bombarded with to make the art I’d been making in the past and loved making.

I picked pincushions and a sewing machine because they were my roommate’s and available -conveniently- on the table. I didn’t have a tripod but I did have a old digital camera. So I held it still and took photos while adding pushpins individually. The angle changes slightly due to my hand shaking, but not enough to notice. It’s a barely visible reminder to myself that this was made by a human and I think that’s endearing.

Stand back from this guy and you see all the change happening. You see the start and the end. Come closer and you see segments of change. This happens in person, I promise.

Pencil Ball

First I made a giant globe. The sharp pencils are where America is. Erasers stick out of the middle of every other country, “fighting” encroaching lead.

American culture is everywhere.

On a side note, my sophomore year of high school my World History teacher made us do “mental maps” where we had to mentally draw a map of the world from memory. And it was graded. I hated her doing that and talked so much shit about it. Having done that before was incredibly helpful when I made this piece. Sorry Mrs. Robinson for the mess I talked.

Though I didn’t make a video of it, I stuck the tail of this guy into a toilet. The water seeped up and made it all a soggy mess.

Art is shit sometimes. It’s just an object, albeit a pleasing and intellectually stimulating one. It’s not meant to last forever and preserving it for every future generation to view isn’t the right course.

Also, ummmm…why can’t I hold a camera straight? Bad Lexi.

Giant Cardboard Grogger

For sculpture class we were given a small object and were told to recreate it out of cardboard an exact percentage larger with very little room for error. So I got this obscure Jewish musical instrument. Now I know a grogger is, trivia contests here I come!

Oh, and it had to be functional. It spins and makes noise. And is huge.

I’m barefoot purely for size emphasis. I’m not getting snacks out of Moulee and Lindsay’s apartment.
